"To love deeply or to have mercy: The one who has been spared."

"I call on heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have presented you with life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore, choose life, so that you will live, you and your descendants, loving Adonai your God, paying attention to what he says and clinging to him — for that is the purpose of your life!" Deuteronomy 30:19-20 CJB

I use to think the Bible was a book of do’s and don'ts. I thought it was a book that in many ways didn't apply to me, especially the Old Testament. It never occurred to me that I was reading it all wrong. The Scriptures are not written in my language, to my culture or to my moment in time. It was written at a different time, in a different place and in a different way from the way I have learned to think. Even so, the wisdom in the Scriptures is timeless.

The Bible isn't about me, it's about the One who created me. My identity and purpose are intertwined with who God is. It's not meant to be read it's meant to be consumed, to take it deep within and internalize it. To understand its design, unlock the patterns within it and follow what it says is how we discover the heart of God. God's Son is the Key to discovery. Because from Genesis 1:1 to Revelations 22:21, the Scriptures speak to us and tell us about Jesus. The paradox of life is that,

“All creation can plainly see that he exists, but those who have been illuminated by the Holy Spirit can begin to see who he really is.” Tony Evans

Humans have the capability of ignoring things they don’t want to see. We don’t see God because we don’t want to see Him. We want to be the masters of our own destiny because we think we know what we want better than anyone else. We are afraid if we allow the Holy Spirit to show us who God really is, we won’t be able to have the freedom to be who we want to be.

I have found those thoughts to be untrue. We don’t have the ability to control our destiny or anything in life except our thoughts, and we don’t do a good job of that on our own. Our thoughts either lead us to peace or pain, nothing else on this earth lasts except those two paths. The truth is, we don’t lose who we are when we follow Jesus. We actually become more of who we were created to be. We don’t lose our individuality; we find our purpose and that is what brings real passion to our lives. Following Jesus does not make our lives perfect or trouble free. It brings us freedom from a life of perpetual emptiness and leads us to a life of abundant satisfaction.

The Word

"Your eternal word, O Lord, stands firm in heaven. Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the earth you created. Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves your plans. If your instructions hadn’t sustained me with joy, I would have died in my misery. I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life." Psalms 119:89-93 NLT

"Simon Peter replied, 'Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.'" John 6:68 NLT
